Yesterday I had my first blind date.
I had been thinking about it for a while and then, over the weekend, I decided I would take a chance and reach out.
After leaving a message on the answering machine, I got a call back within the hour. After a few minutes of chatting, we decided to get together at my home the next morning at 10 a.m.
I tidied up the house a bit in anticipation of his arrival.
He arrived earlier than expected, but waited outside in his truck until exactly 10 a.m. As he strolled up the driveway, I noticed how neatly dressed and well-groomed he was. I was very impressed.
He greeted me by name and reached out to shake my hand as he introduced himself.
I lead Ryan into my home and showed him around each room. He said his visit wouldn’t be long
and that he was certain I would be very happy with the end result.
Now, this isn’t what you might think it is, so let me fill you in.
This Isn’t the Blind Date You Thought It Was
While you may have thought I was talking about a gentleman caller, truth be told, this was my first in-home blind cleaning experience.
I had seen the “Blind Date” truck out and about over the past several years while I was driving around the city and decided to look into what it was.
Turns out, it’s actually Ryan’s truck that he uses for his company, Blind Date Cleaning, which offers in-home blind cleaning services.
Everything owner/operator Ryan Chapman needs to clean your blinds is in his truck. He attaches his hose to your outside water connection, removes the blinds from your windows, takes them to the truck to be cleaned, then brings them back in and reinstalls them.
In the past I have taken it upon myself to clean my own blinds once a year.
I rigged up a system where I attached a series of huge screws to my back fence to hang up the blinds, and then I can hose and wash them down with soapy water. It works, but generally takes me the better part of a day, not to mention leaving me quite exhausted and the yard flooded with soapy water.
In between these yearly baths, I try to keep them clean with frequent dusting. If you have horizontal blinds, you know this is an endless and thankless task.
In any case, I’ve used blind cleaning services in the past that will come out, take the blinds away and return them about a week later. This works perfectly fine during a renovation, but I myself am a bit hesitant to be exposed to the neighbours for that length of time.
So, on the day of my first “Blind Date”, I decided to take advantage of the fact that the windows would be fully exposed and washed them while Ryan was out in his truck cleaning the blinds.
I cannot tell you the satisfaction I felt after it was all done.
Start to finish, it took just over two hours to have clean windows, clean blinds, and a shiny new outlook on my home.
And believe it or not, this all took place before lunch.
Now I can see my garden both in and out of the house!
