Like a classic black suit that never goes out of fashion, the same goes for your larger, big-investment furniture pieces. Unless you have unlimited amounts of money, dropping thousands on a bright pink sofa might not be the best choice for you!
As a rule of thumb, invest in the best quality (you can afford), basic furniture pieces to anchor your rooms, then build off that with more trendy and colourful accessories.
The furniture pieces in the photo are a perfect example of this practice. The big investment pieces in this room are the two sofas and area carpet. The mid-tone grey in these pieces can go with pretty much any colour scheme.
The coffee and end tables are family heirlooms. Originally purchased in the 70s, they were big investment pieces at the time, made of solid wood and of very good quality. We updated them with a bit of paint and stain to tie in with the rest of the décor.
The result: a classic room my clients will enjoy for years.
