Design Tip: Give The Emperor a New Set of Clothes

What is old can be new again! Many of us have a favourite piece of upholstered furniture that has seen better days. Maybe the fabric has worn out or is faded. Perhaps the colour or pattern just doesn’t work in your space anymore. Or, maybe the style is outdated.

All of this can be changed and updated to suite your décor. Maybe it’s time to treat your favourite chair or sofa to some fresh new upholstery! By reusing and refurbishing old furniture you are not only bringing life to your much-loved pieces, but you’re saving them from the landfill.

There are literally thousands of colours and patterns of fabrics to choose from. And while your piece is in the shop, you can request further updates as well. You can make the seat cushions as soft or firm as you desire, modify the shape of the back or arm to make the style more current, or even reduce the height or length.

For the loveseat in these photos, we modified the arms and back to create a more modern, streamlined shape. We replaced the two seat and back cushions with one bench seat and back.

Sian Loveseat and Ottoman before and after

We also created a throw that the client could drape over the back of the loveseat to protect it from potential overspray from the kitchen faucet. The ottoman was transformed into a streamlined rectangle that could serve double duty as a coffee table.
